The Process of Sustainability

We live in a dynamic and interconnected world, facing multifaceted challenges that require us to rethink our relationship with the environment and with each other. The path towards sustainability is not a single, well-defined road but a complex landscape that we must navigate with awareness, adaptability, a willingness to explore multiple directions simultaneously, and an understanding that errors and mistakes will be made along the way. We need to give and show each other grace so people stop feeling the need to cover things up or feed false narratives in order to cover their own asses. In other words, we need to operate on versions of the truth that are similar to God's reality.

This exploration must also take into account the different time cycles inherent in various systems. Recognizing the Earth's annual cycle, as well as the varying rhythms of ecological, social, and economic systems, allows for more effective observation, analysis, and action.

Exploring different understandings of the past, shaped by our unique experiences and cultural backgrounds, inform our values and priorities, leading us to envision different pathways towards a sustainable future.

Recognizing this diversity of perspectives and time scales, the Process of Sustainability embraces simultaneous exploration in multiple directions. Different individuals, organizations, and communities may be engaged in different aspects of observation, analysis, experimentation, and stewardship, all contributing to a collective movement towards a shared goal. This parallel experimentation allows us to learn faster, adapt more quickly, and discover solutions that might not have emerged from a more singular approach.

The Process of Sustainability provides a framework for this dynamic and multifaceted exploration. It allows different groups to focus on different aspects of the challenge, to experiment with different solutions, and to share their findings through ongoing communication and collaboration. Reflection and evaluation then become crucial for synthesizing these diverse strands of inquiry and refining our collective understanding of the path towards a sustainable future. This understanding informs our stewardship, the integration of all previous steps into responsible action.

  1. Observe: Be still, monitor the system (ecological, social, economic), gather data, and pay attention to changes and trends.

  2. Analyze: Interpret the data, understand the system's dynamics, identify patterns, and determine the root causes of problems.

  3. Experiment/Innovate: Develop and test potential solutions, try new approaches, and foster creativity and innovation.

  4. Collaborate/Participate: Engage diverse stakeholders, work across disciplines and sectors, and build partnerships.

  5. Educate/Communicate: Share findings, raise awareness, promote understanding, and inspire action through effective communication.

  6. Steward: Take informed and responsible action to maintain or improve the system's health and resilience, based on the knowledge gained through the previous steps.

  7. Reflect/Evaluate: Assess the effectiveness of actions taken, learn from successes and failures, and critically evaluate the entire process.
